Jeremy Bentham was born in London 1748 and educated at Westminster School.

He studied law at Lincoln´s Inn and was called to the bar in 1772. The law in Bentham´s view needed to be revised and he started to reform it. Jeremy Bentham thought that laws should be socially useful and not merely reflect the status quo; and, that while he believed that men automatically pursued pleasure and avoided pain, Bentham thought it to be a "sacred truth" that "the greatest happiness of the greatest number is the foundation of morals and legislation" (utalitarianism). Bentham´s revolution was to be effected by legislation, William Godwin´s by argument.

Jeremy Bentham died in 1832.
